Country: Bahamas

Waiting time/residency requirements: Persons wishing to be married in the The Bahamas may do so after one day, i.e. if a person arrives in The Bahamas on Monday, they may come into the Registrar General Office on Tuesday, obtain a Marriage License (while waiting), and be married on the same day.

Documentation requirements: If either party is unmarried, being a citizen or resident of the U.S.A., a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn before a U.S. Consul at the American Embassy, Nassau, The Bahamas. If either party is unmarried, being a citizen or resident of a country other than the U.S.A., a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn before a Notary Public or other person authorized to administer oaths in that country and must accompany the application for the marriage License.

The parties must produce some form of government identification which has a photograph attached. The identification document must have been issued by a Government Office in the country where the parties reside. The parties must produce evidence of the date of their arrival in The Bahamas, i.e. plane ticket. Persons desirous of being married in a family Islands (any Island outside of New Providence) can obtain a Marriage License at the Commissioners’ Office on that Island and need not come to Nassau.

Prior marriage documentation: If either part has been divorced, the original final decree or a certified copy must be produced. If either party is widowed, being certified of the deceased spouse must be produced.

Waiting time/residency requirements: None, however application for a marriage license must be made by both parties in person at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in the capital city Bridgetown.  

Documentation requirements: Valid passports or birth certificates for both parties.

Return tickets. For a Roman Catholic ceremony, the relevant documents must be sent by your bishop to the bishop of Bridgetown.

Prior marriage documentation: If either party was divorced you will need an original Decree Absolute or a certified copy of the Final Judgment.

If either party was previously married and widowed, a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse.

Waiting time/residency requirements: There's no requirement of island residency, but a couple must apply for a license at the attorney general's office, and stay in the B.V.I. for at least 3 days while the paperwork is processed.

Waiting time/residency requirements: There is no waiting period, however couples who would like to get married in Bermuda must file a "Notice of Intended Marriage" with the Registry General, accompanied by a fee of $243, plus $42 for the certificate (in the form of a bank draft or money order, not a personal check). Once the Registry General receives the "Notice of Intended Marriage," it will be published, including names and addresses, in any two of the island's newspapers. Assuming that there is no formal objection, the registry will issue the license 15 days after receiving the notice. Airmailing your completed notice to Bermuda takes 6 to 10 days, so plan accordingly. The marriage license will be sent to you and will be valid for 3 months. Waiting time/residency requirements: Couples must be on island 3 days before applying for a marriage license, for which there is a 14-day waiting period. The letter has to be signed by both partners. Send two wedding dates with times.

Documentation requirements: Passport, birth certificate and return ticket. International declaration of unmarried status by the civil registration of your hometown and an apostille/legalization. These requirements need to be original and recent and apostille*.

Prior marriage documentation: If applicable, proof of divorce or the death certificate of a deceased spouse are required.

Blood test/medical examination: None.

Witness required: If you choose to bring a witness from home, he or she must be 21 years of age. When you register a witness you need their full names, address and date of birth. The witness will need a copy of valid passport. The witnesses should apply for temporary residence. A wedding planner can also arrange for local witnesses.

Country: Dominican Republic

Waiting time/residency requirements: None. Most hotels have wedding coordinators on site to help you, however, be warned, they like to receive paperwork at least 15 days in advance to prepare for your wedding. After the ceremony, you will be given a document that proves the wedding took place. You then need to request a marriage certificate from the local Justice of the Peace. The document issued by the Justice of the Peace is a valid marriage certificate anywhere in the world.

Documentation requirements: US citizens are required to write to the American Consulate in Santo Domingo requesting permission to marry. Parties must be at least 18 years of age to marry.  Passport, original birth certificate, single status affidavit in Spanish for each party (joint affidavits are not acceptable). These must be notarized and state whether the bride or groom has ever been married, divorced, or widowed.

Prior marriage documentation: Divorce decree or death certificate for partner (Translated into Spanish). ***According to Dominican Law a divorced woman has to wait 10 months before remarrying unless she is marrying the same man she divorced.

Waiting time/residency requirements: There is no waiting period to get married however arrangements must be made in advance. Visitors have to call ahead and arrange for an authorized person to marry them. The name of the "marriage officer," as it is called, has to appear on the application for a marriage license. Waiting time/residency requirements: There are no residency requirements to get married in Puerto Rico however the necessary paperwork must be filed in advance. This can take up to 3+ months, but can be done by mail.

Prior marriage documentation: If you've been divorced or widowed, bring certified copies of your divorce papers or a copy of the deceased spouse's death certificate with a raised seal.

Blood test/medical examination: Yes. A blood test must be completed no more than 10 days prior to the marriage. A doctor in Puerto Rico must sign the license after conducting an examination of the bride and groom.

Country: Turks & Caicos

Waiting time/residency requirements: Persons wishing to be married in the Turks and Caicos Islands may do so after one day (24 hours), before an application for a Marriage License can be made to the Registrar in Grand Turk. The ceremony can then take place after a period of 2-3 days or at any time after the application has been granted. Both parties must be in The Turks and Caicos Islands at the time of the application.

Documentation requirements: Passport, Original Birth Certificate, Proof of marital status - If single a sworn affidavit is required. If under the age of 21, then consent of one or both parents or guardian, in the form of an affidavit stamped by the Notary Public.

The marriage parties must not be within the prohibited degree of relationships to each other. Include a letter stating both parties occupations, marital status, age as of last birthday, present address of residence and fathers full name. The parties must produce evidence of the date of their arrival in The Turks and Caicos Islands.

Prior marriage documentation: If one of the parties is a divorcee, then a Divorce Decree is required, either the original or a notarized copy, sealed by a Court Clerk. In the case of a Widow/Widower a Death Certificate of the previous spouse is required. In the case of change of name by Deed Poll or Adoption, then proof is required.

Blood test/medical examination: Yes, Mexico requires a prenuptial medical certificate with test results of syphilis, HIV, and Rh factor (blood type).  This certificate should have been issued locally within the last 15 days.
